Closing this loophole could fund any number of legislative priorities such as an increase in teacher pay or lowering the business rent tax. “There’s a percentage advantage that out of state, online retailers have over our local brick and mortar retailers,” said Senator Gruters. “We’ve all seen the people who take a picture of a price in a store then go outside and buy the product online and save $5. But who does that hurt? It hurts our retailers and business owners. This is not a new tax. This is a tax that’s already owed, and SB 126 will work to level the playing and add convenience for the consumer.” This is not a new tax. This is an issue of fairness. And it’s why 43 of 45 states have already leveled the playing field between main street businesses and online retailers.
